How to Choose a Newborn Photographer

Choosing a newborn photographer is a big decision. After all, these are forever memories of your new baby—memories that you and your family will cherish throughout your lives. Getting started with your search is often the easy part. You can ask around for word-of-mouth referrals, do an internet search for “newborn photography near me,” or lose yourself scrolling through gorgeous baby pictures on social media. But once you’ve found some favorites, what then? How do you narrow down your search and choose the right newborn photographer for you?

There are 3 main areas I recommend looking at when choosing that perfect someone to document the first memories of your baby.

Expertise

Babies are fragile and precious, and photographing them requires special skill and training. Make sure that any potential photographer has taken courses in infant safety and posing so you can feel confident that your little one is in good hands. You can usually get a feel for a photographer’s expertise from reading their reviews to see what past clients have to say about working with them.

Experience

Talent and training are wonderful, but there is no substitute for experience! While there’s nothing wrong with choosing a newer photographer who is just starting out in business, it’s important to know how much newborn portrait experience your photographer has under their belt. That way you can come to your session with realistic expectations. To get an idea of a photographer’s experience, check out their portfolio. If they are an experienced photographer, they should have photos from several different sessions, not just one or two.

Style

Last, but certainly not least, you’ll want to make sure that your newborn photographer’s style is a good match for your own vision of what you want your baby pictures to look like. Go back to their portfolio and have another look. While every session will be a little different, your photographer should have a cohesive style–a common thread that runs through all of their images. For example, my photography style is classic, artistic, and timeless. My images are clean with just a pop of color, and I often use more muted shades. I do use props, but my focus is always the baby. Remember, there’s no right or wrong when it comes to style. It’s simply a matter of personal preference.
